In 1976, the Artists’ Association of Finland commissioned four artist apartment buildings in Oulunkylä, Helsinki. Today, the Oulunkylä Artist Apartments is owned by the Studio Foundation and has 17 work-live apartments and two separate artist studios, where 21 visual artists live and work. The size of the work-live apartments varies from 87 m² to 116 m².
The Oulunkylä Artist Apartments were designed by architect and artist professor Kirmo Mikkola (1934–1986) and architect and professor Esko Lehti (1933–1995).
The work-live apartments were preceded by a phase when the Artists’ Association of Finland owned the former co-educational school building in Oulunkylä from the 1950s onwards and provided it for use by visual artists. The Foundation sold the school building, and the Artists’ Association of Finland commissioned the Oulunkylä Artist Apartments to replace it in the 1970s.
After the Studio Foundation was established, the Oulunkylä Artist Apartments were transferred from the Finnish Artists’ Association to the Studio Foundation in 1992.
