Herttoniemi Art Foundry

Herttoniemi in Helsinki is home to one of the most esteemed art foundries in Finland, where a significant proportion of the large monuments and museum-level sculptures created by Finnish visual artists are cast. The facility is owned by the Studio Foundation and rented to the Herttoniemi Art Foundry.

At the Herttoniemi Art Foundry, a professional caster casts artists’ works in bronze and aluminium as commissioned. Sculpture restoration work is also performed at the foundry.

In 1960, the Mannerheim equestrian statue delegation gave the Artists’ Association of Finland the funds to build an art foundry in Herttoniemi. The building was designed by architect Reima Pietilä (1923–1993).

For the first decades, the Association of Finnish Sculptors was responsible for operating the foundry as a tenant of the Artists’ Association of Finland. In 1987, foundry operations were transferred to the Herttoniemi Art Foundry, which was established by casters.

The Studio Foundation purchased the art foundry building from the Artists’ Association of Finland in 1991. Half of the purchase was covered by a grant for this purpose from the Ministry of Education.
