The Tapiola Artist Apartments, completed in 1955 in Espoo, are a single-storey wooden rowhouse. Consisting of ten work-live apartments, four have an area of 83 m² and six have an area of 100 m². Fifteen visual artists work in the building.
The Tapiola Artist Apartments were designed by the architect and professor Aulis Blomstedt (1906–1979). Commissioned by the Artists’ Association of Finland in the 1950s to address the growing need for working facilities for visual artists, it is Finland’s first work-live rowhouse specifically built for artists.
The Tapiola Artist Apartments played a key role in the early stages of the Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation. When the foundation was established, the Artists’ Association of Finland transferred the Tapiola apartments and plot of land to the Studio Foundation as its initial capital. In other words, the apartments were the first property owned by the Studio Foundation and marked the beginning of its operations.
The building is also home to the Tapiola Scholarship Studio Apartment, for which an artist or an artist couple is selected every three years. The Tapiola Scholarship Studio Apartment is a project launched by the Studio Foundation in collaboration with the City of Espoo and the Espoo Museum of Modern Art EMMA.
