Pälkäneentie 18 is the latest part of the Vallila Artist Studios complex, which also includes Lemuntie 6 and Kisällitalo. The Studio Foundation owns 800 square metres of facilities on the top two floors of the building, where 23 visual artists work. The building also contains warehouses for visual artists.
Pälkäneentie 18, which was completed in 1937, is the oldest factory building on the block. Architect Kerttu Tamminen designed a three-storey red brick house for paper and print company Paperi- ja Painotuote Oy. The following year, the building was extended by two floors, and in 1969, more changes were made to it based on designs by architect Terttu Mehto.
The Studio Foundation purchased the Pälkäneentie 18 facilities in 2006. In addition to a government grant from the Ministry of Education, the procurement was made possible by a bequest from the will of painter and graphic artist Olavi Vepsäläinen and Ilma Roponen-Vepsäläinen, PhD.
Pälkäneentie 18 is home to Atelier Neva – Helsinki Classical Art School which offers private education in visual arts.
